Chao Zhou Graduation

Congratulations to Chao for a successful thesis defense! We look forward to hearing about his new accomplishments at the Schoelkopf Lab!

ModQ and FASTCARS

Two of the Hatlab's reserach thrusts will be supported as part of the QCS-5 umbrella program from the LPS/ARO. Our efforts to build modular quantum computers in collaboration with the Jones group in ECE and Schoelkopf Lab at Yale will be supported by the ModQ sub-program. In parallel our parametric amplifier research, in collaboration with the Pekker group at Pitt, the Aumentado/Amp group at NIST, and the Tureci group at Princeton, including developing new wideband, high saturation power 'practical' and directional 'embedded' amplifiers will be supported under FASTCARS.

Western Pennsylvania Quantum Information Core Begins

As part of the University of Pittsburgh's continued investment in quantum technology reserach, the university has established a new fund called the Western Pennsylvania Quantum Information Core. This allocation will support equipment and personnel costs across multiple institutions. Michael Hatridge will serve as the academic director. The coming year will see the first equipment ordered to flesh out this facility, which will be housed immediately adjacent to the Hatlab.

New Kaufman Grant

Hatlab is excited to work with PI Alex Jones and co-advised graduate Evan McKinney on a new award from the Charles E. Kaufman foundation. The project will use the Hatlab SNAIL architecture to study multi-qubit gates.

New Paper!

We are pleased to announce our paper Noise Reduction in Qubit Readout with a Two-Mode Squeezed Interferometer has been accepted to Physical Review Applied. Congratulations to Gangqiang Liu and Xi Cao (Hatlab alumni) for showcasing this novel approach to qubit readout using exotic states of light.

New Papers!

Hatlab is proud to share its two new papers on quantum-limited amplifiers, which have just been published in Phys, Rev. A: the first is a theoretical description of optimization via full Hamiltonian control, the other is an experimental focus on a Kerr-free amplifier design with qubit measurement. Please check them out here:
Experiment: Multiparametric amplification and qubit measurement with a Kerr-free Josephson ring modulator;
Theory: Optimizing Josephson-ring-modulator-based Josephson parametric amplifiers via full Hamiltonian control

Fullerton and Hatridge named 2020 Sloan Research Fellows

Congratulations to both Prof. Susan Fullerton in Pitt Chemical Engineering and Prof. Michael Hatridge in Pitt Physics as recipients of 2020 Sloan Research Fellowships! Awarded annually since 1955, the fellowships honor scholars in the U.S. and Canada whose creativity, leadership, and independent research achievements make them some of the most promising researchers working today. Winners receive $75,000, which may be spent over a two-year term on any expense supportive of their research.

2019

PQI Graduate Student Research Award

Graduate student Tzu-Chiao Chien won the PQI graduate student research award for his thriving experiments on 'Broadband bi-directional amplification via paired simultaneous parametric drives'. Congratulations TZC!

Arts & Sciences Graduate Fellow in the Physics & Astronomy Department

Graduate student Xi Cao was awarded the Art & Science Graduate Fellowship for his pioneering experiments on 'Experimental realization of chemical potential for light via parametric coupling'. Congratulations Xi!

Emil Sanielevici Undergraduate Research Scholarship

Undergraduate senior Sarah Motz was awarded the Emil Sanielevici Research Scholarship, given annually to an undergraduate major in the Physics department to encourage enthusiasm for scientific research. Sarah won for her proposal to improve qubit coherence times through the use of a cavity attenuator. Congratulations Sarah!

PIRE NSF GRANT

HatLab is pleased to announce that it will be leading an international team to discover the best materials for quantum information processing platforms. Along with Dr. Michael Hatridge, the other co-principle investigators will be Dr. Frolov, Dr. Petek and Dr. Peker from Pitt. Pitt will lead the five-year collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University; the University of California, Santa Barbara; French partners from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives; and industrial partner Microsoft Research. The PIRE program will bring together materials engineers, surface scientists, computational chemists and physicists, as well as students from all levels at Pitt. Researchers will also have the opportunity to conduct research in France. Check it out here: https://www.pittwire.pitt.edu/news/pitt-lead-international-team-create-hardware-quantum-computers

New Initiatives Grant from the Charles E. Kaufman Foundation

The Hatlab has just been awarded the New Initiatives Grant from the Charles E. Kaufman foundation at the Pittsburgh foundation. This grant is offered to scientists in Pennsylvania who explore questions which go beyond the abilities of a single researcher fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. This grant will aid in the lab's joint effort with Professor Roger Mong to create new topologically protected quantum wiring for quantum ciruits. The effort will be a fusion of the rapidly developing fields of superconducting quantum circuits, manipulation of quantum light and the physics of topological materials.
